Here are some answers to frequently asked questions
Can't I just follow the instructions in your book?
Yes, of course. Many hundreds of authors have already done this and are very happy with the results. However, the book recommends the use of paid third-party tools to automate many of the activities required. These require you to be comfortable setting up and implementing them. It also requires you to manually follow and unfollow people each and every day, which many authors find repetitive and monotonous. This service handles all of that. Read Cost Justifying Your Author Sidekick to understand more about the benefits of Sidekick over doing it yourself.
What happens after I sign up?
After subscribing, you will receive a link to a secure area of the Author Platform Sidekick website, where you will receive instructions on how to provide the information necessary to set up the service. The first step is to fill in an online form to arrange access to your Twitter account so that we can set up and link the required third-party tools used behind the scenes by the service. This is a one-off exercise. Once complete, you are welcome to set a new permanent password on your account, not known to Author Platform Sidekick.
Can I update the information I provide Author Platform Sidekick?
Yes, at any time. Everything you provide will be available for you to view, update or delete at any time.
Can I select which authors I team up with on the Team Up Plans?
No. All authors subscribed to Team Up will work with each other. Whoever tweets you on any specific day is down to chance, based on a random selection from all team up authors taking part in the service.
Are the Team Up authors in free and paid plans working together?
Yes. Regardless of whether you pay to take part or use the Free subscription, all authors work together. Team Up Member (Paid) Authors get tweeted every day (except Sunday) whereas Team Up Associate (Free) authors only get tweeted twice a week, but they tweet others every day.
Is it possible to have genre specific Team Ups?
We hope so in the future, once critical mass is established.
Do I have to take part in Team Ups if I subscribe to the Builder plan or above?
No, it is completely optional to take part in team ups.
Do you have to unfollow people?
To attract more followers you need to follow people who may then follow you back. But, it is essential to unfollow people in order to ensure that your account has less follows than followers. Twitter won't allow you to follow more people if the number of people you follow is much higher than your follower total. Unfollowing is a generally accepted practice.
If someone subscribes to my email list for a free book or short story, will you send it to them?
No. Authors using the Emailer Option are required to provide a URL address for a sign-up page (aka landing page) where they collect the reader's email address and add it to their own email list. Sidekick's objective is to send anyone who clicks on the offer to the author's landing page.
What landing page options do you support?
We can send traffic to any URL you provide. A landing page is usually a dedicated page on the author's website with the single objective of presenting the giveaway offer and collecting the readers email address, passing it through to the author's own mailing system. However, if you don't have a landing page there are many alternative ways to present a giveaway and collect an email address. E.g. InstaFreebie, BookFunnel, LeadPages, BookLaunch.io, an email system hosted form, etc). Read Landing Page Options for Book Giveaways for more information.
Isn't there more to an author platform than just Twitter and email?
Absolutely! There's your website, your Facebook profile, your Amazon author page, your email autoresponder sequence, your Goodreads profile, etc, etc. The Sidekick team have considerable experience in all these areas and may expand the service in the future. But for now, the current service focuses on two of the most impactful elements: your Twitter account and email list. A large Twitter following gives you credibility. A large email list allows you to launch books with much greater impact.
Will I sell more books by using the Sidekick service?
While some Sidekick customers have reported increases in book sales directly attributed to their increased activity on Twitter, it's a well known fact that Twitter is not the best social media platform to sell anything. Increasing your engagement on Twitter should be considered more as branding and giving you greater reach to get your message out. Any increase in sales would be a side benefit.
There are too many factors that influence book sales. However, we can guarantee that you will send more people to your books on Amazon and other stores and this can be tracked. Whether they then buy depends on pricing, blurb, cover design, reviews and other factors outside of our control. Sidekick should be used as part of an overall book marketing strategy.
How are you able to offer this service cheaper than the monthly costs of the tools recommended in the book?
The paid-third party tools recommended in Advanced Twitter Strategies for Authors cost $89 per month when taken out on monthly plans. Sidekick has negotiated improved volume rates with vendors to be able to offer this service as well as identified more scalable alternative third-party tools. You can read Cost Justifying Your Author Sidekick to understand more about why this is better than doing it yourself.
Do I have to do anything at all on Twitter?
Yes, it's still your Twitter account! You will receive lots more mentions as a result of your expanded reach and activity. It is imperative that you engage in conversation with people yourself by replying to tweets and mentions. That's the fun of Twitter after all!
Can you advise me on how to write my promotional tweets so that I don't appear spammy?
Yes, Ian includes lots of advice and best practice on this topic in the book and on the site. You receive a free copy of the book as an added bonus when you subscribe!
Can you guarantee that I won't post offensive material?
If you take advantage of the Newsdesk capabilities of the service, then it's impossible to guarantee not to do this as we cannot control the posts that other websites publish. However, it should be a rare occurrence.
Do you vet the tweets provided by authors for Team Ups.
Yes, before loading into the queues, all tweets are validated by the Author Platform Sidekick team to ensure they are safe for posting. The form is designed restrictively so that tweets are informative rather than overtly salesy. Erotica authors are not allowed to take part in the Team Up service
Can I use picture tweets for my promotional and non-promotional content?
Yes, we recommend it! And if you want to use Twitter Cards then this is even better.
Is Ian Sutherland taking part in the team ups?
Yes. Privately, and as part of running Author Platform Sidekick, Ian runs 5 Twitter accounts with over 200,000 followers in total. All of these will be tweeting Team Up members' content (randomly chosen, just like everyone else).
How can I get a refund?

After this, you can cancel at any time, either electing for the service to run on until the end of the period or to activities stop immediately.
